Big time adolescence hulu. | Nick Allen March 13, 2020 Pete Davidson has only just started playing lead roles in feature films, and he has already achieved a mythic silver screen presence. Later this year, we’ll see him play a version of himself in the Judd Apatow studio project “The King of Staten Island, ” and this week we see Davidson as a different type of legend, playing the funny, slightly older screw-up you looked up to when doing your own growing up. You know: the charismatic figure you thought had it all figured out because they partied through the good and the bad. But then you get slightly wiser, and you see what that person doesn't have in their life, how no-rules coolness is just Monopoly money when the party is over. It’s a common wake-up call experienced by numerous film characters, and writer/director Jason Orley at least makes us laugh and relax before getting to obvious reasons about why you shouldn’t want to be like Davidson's chaotic slacker Zeke. Advertisement But Mo ( Griffin Gluck) doesn’t know this lesson yet, because he’s in high school. Mo looks up to Zeke as if he were the coolest older brother, even though Zeke is the ex-boyfriend of Mo's sister Kate ( Emily Arlook). Mo is a decent kid, relatively plain, and that makes him highly susceptible to influence. As he hangs out with Zeke more and more, spending time with Zeke’s drinking and smoking buddies, Mo unknowingly but willingly mutates himself into Zeke. First it’s when Mo repeats Zeke’s jokes, then it’s when Mo tries out Zeke's crude strategy in order to get a classmate Sophie ( Oona Laurence) to want him back. It’s a highly unusual friendship, but the chemistry between Gluck and Davidson help make it seem like a believable anomaly. Davidson’s Zeke is the constantly amused devil on the shoulder of Gluck’s high schooler Mo. And because Mo wants to be popular, Zeke essentially pushes him to sell drugs to the older rich kids at their weird themed parties. It's just one of many things that Zeke normalizes for him, and in turn sets Mo on a path of destruction. With his feature debut, Orley presents himself as someone who knows this world of suburban kid basement parties well, but also as a storyteller interested in the dynamics to be found in these two slackers of varying levels. In particular, it becomes apparent that even though Zeke is introduced as a goofy god, Zeke needs Mo just as much to help make himself look cool, too. This creates a sizable symbiotic bond that the movie lives and dies on, and "Big Time Adolescence" often hits a strong beat anytime it builds backstory to make it about how their backstories inform their need for each other. But Orley’s script cheats itself out of any major emotional impact. As strong as it may to be start hanging out with them, basically anyone watching this movie would know that this kind of life gets old fast; some urgency is given to the film by tender performances from Jon Cryer (as Mo's dad) and Oona Laurence (especially when her character Sophie realizes that Mo nonetheless walks and talks like a jerk). Watching Mo learn all of this feels more obvious than usual for a story about arrested development—of course the fast life will lead to loneliness—because Orley doesn’t offer any sense earlier that he's much interested in shaking things up. But Orley has enough jokes and heart in “Big Time Adolescence” to recommend it as a comedy, getting laughs from character work (Davidson’s hyper-active performance especially), little gags in the background, and abrupt cuts that create their own punchline. And the supporting cast stands out too—there's a liveliness whenever Zeke, Mo, Nick (Machine Gun Kelly), Danny (Omar Brunson) and Holly ( Sydney Sweeney) are in Zeke's pit of an apartment together, even if you don't want to drink whatever they're drinking. Orley is also constantly mindful for framing and how characters fit into an image, giving the movie’s hangout scenes a sense of being loose in story, but considered visually. Even when "Big Time Adolescence" starts to become ordinary, it always has a freshness from its on-screen talent, and from the promise of Orley’s directorial eye. Reveal Comments comments powered by.

Pete is so hot. Big time adolescence movie trailer mgk. 2:03 bro I'm dead 😂. From a distance, Big Time Adolescence might look like not much more than a low-budget showcase for lovable SNL goofball Pete Davidson. Which would be fine. But the movie is, surprisingly, quite a bit more. It's a perceptive coming-of-age tale brought to life—under the guidance of first-time director Jason Orley—by an ensemble of terrific young actors. It's funny (Orley also wrote the script), but it's filled with honest emotion, too. The picture won't change the world, but it could change an otherwise joyless day for the better. (It was intended for a theatrical-only release last weekend; but then, as world news grew dark and the home-viewing audience began to swell, it was launched on Hulu, as well. ) Davidson naturally has the showiest role here, playing Zeke, a 20-something slacker who's long past his grow-the-fuck-up date. With his bagged-out clothing and many tattoos, Davidson's Zeke is pretty much the same giddy clown we know from TV. The comic gives a carefully shaped dramatic performance, however, effectively demonstrating the shortcomings of his character's let's-party approach to life. But he's still "Pete Davidson, " and the movie offers little proof that he'll be able to move beyond that persona. But Davidson isn't actually the star. The movie really belongs to the very quietly charismatic Griffin Gluck, playing a 16-year-old high-school student named Monroe. Mo, as he's called, is a bright and well-mannered kid who met Zeke when the older guy was dating Mo's sister, Kate (Emily Arlook). During that now-concluded period, Mo came to look up to Zeke as an older-brother surrogate ("He took me to R-rated movies, he showed me a picture of a naked girl on his phone, " we're told in a voice-over), and they've stayed tight ever since. (The movie doesn't acknowledge the basic creepiness of a 23-year-old man obsessively hanging out with a teenage boy—that's not the subject it wants to deal with—but it's impossible to ignore, and it's a flaw in the film. ) When Mo hears about an upcoming cool-kids party, his friend Stacey (Thomas Barbusca) says they should go and bring along booze and drugs to ease their acceptance by this older crowd. Zeke, who's made a career out of getting wasted, supplies the goods, and over the course of succeeding parties, using Mo as a dealer, he builds up a nice little sideline—one profitable enough to allow him to quit the latest of his many dismal jobs, as a clerk at a discount store. (Zeke tells Mo he eventually wants to become a talk-show host, or maybe start a podcast; later he says he's written a screenplay "in my head. " We can see where his life isn't going. ) Fate tosses Mo a potential lifeline in the form of a girl named Sophie (Oona Laurence, whose clipped, no-nonsense cool recalls Emma Watson in the early Harry Potter films). We observe their first date and first kiss—both sweet, but not treacly—and then watch in dismay as Mo solicits advice on how to treat women…from Zeke, a man whose romantic experience consists largely of serial dumpings. The movie maintains a careful balance between showing us what makes Zeke so seductive (he offers the freedom of not caring about anything) and so darkly alarming (he really doesn't care about anything at all). Will Mo wise up? Of course. In time? Don't count on it.

NEON/Hulu March 12, 2020, 7:00 a. m. ET Big Time Adolescence Directed by Jason Orley Comedy R 1h 31m Pete Davidson, the “Saturday Night Live” bad boy, is a natural at playing the guy your parents want you to stay away from. His character in “ Big Time Adolescence, ” the tatted, platinum-haired, foul-mouthed Zeke, feels like an extension of the Davidson we see in the tabloids. A 23-year-old slacker who never grew up, Zeke spends his time smoking weed and being a bad influence on his fawning minion, the 16-year-old Mo (Griffin Gluck), his ex-girlfriend’s younger brother. Mo is endearingly nerdy, like Duckie from John Hughes’s “Pretty in Pink”; amusingly, Jon Cryer, who portrayed Duckie, plays Mo’s father. He pays Zeke as he would a babysitter. But under Zeke’s tutelage, Mo only wades further into trouble in this debut film by the writer-director Jason Orley. He starts selling drugs to upperclassmen at Zeke’s request, first at a “pimps and hos” party, where, among the flashy costumes, he appears in his father’s bathrobe with a gold chain. Then he tramples a blossoming romance with his crush, Sophie (Oona Laurence), after an ill-advised ghosting. Mo, not unexpectedly, crashes and burns while chasing Zeke’s approval. Though Davidson, Gluck and Laurence show star potential, Orley either boxes them into a too-conventional coming-of-age arc or gives them cloyingly charming characteristics: Mo, awkwardly, calls Sophie instead of texting her; Sophie always has a rapid-fire comeback ready; and Zeke is a walking stoner punchline. Despite some moments of tenderness and easy chemistry between Zeke and Mo, “Big Time Adolescence” doesn’t have enough heart or humor to save it from becoming just another movie about white dudes bro-ing out. Big Time Adolescence Rated R for teens partying too hard. Running time: 1 hour 31 minutes.

In the new comedy Big Time Adolescence, Saturday Night Live regular Pete Davidson finds a screen vehicle perfectly suited to his quirky talents, and in fact even manages a few scenes that actually bring more than one dimension to a strictly one-dimensional character. Hulu started streaming the film early this week after a theatrical run was cut short when theaters were forced to close due to the coronavirus pandemic. It’s nice escapist fare, and I probably don’t have to tell you that boy do we need it now. Deadline In reality, this amusing and entertaining comedy that debuted a year ago at Sundance is above average for the teen genre, keeping itself grounded in believable characters and making a pretty decent coming-of-age story centered on Mo, who is winningly played by Griffin Gluck, an actor at age 17 who has amassed a veteran’s worth of screen and TV credits that started with his big break opposite Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston in 2011’s Just Go For It. Although you might expect a Davidson project to follow in the footsteps of the usual over-the-top high jinks in many (fellow SNL vet) Sandler movies, writer-director Jason Orley shows some welcome restraint in his behind-the-camera debut by never forgetting his characters are human beings, albeit with lots of shortcomings. It starts with a flashback to when Mo was 10 and tagging along with his older sister and her then-high school boyfriend Zeke (Davidson). Cut to six years later and Mo and Zeke are still the best of friends, long after sis has dumped the dead-end BF, outgrowing his childish antics far earlier than little ‘bro ever will. Zeke is a true slacker, hanging with a kid seven years younger and giving him all the wrong advice and encouragement, from getting him to sell weed to classmates to torpedoing a budding romance by urging Mo to ignore a girl, Sophie (Oona Laurence), after a first date in order to keep her “wanting more. ” With free-flowing alcohol, drugs and just about every bad influence, including his own friends and current girlfriend Holly (Sydney Sweeney), Zeke is the kind of guy the basically nice, clean-cut Mo should have stayed far away from, but instead thinks is cool to have as a BFF. It also doesn’t help that Mo has another friend his own age, Jon (Thomas Barbusca), who is just as lethal to be around, and it all goes in bad directions for Mo despite the best efforts of his strict father Reuben (Jon Cryer) to keep him on the straight and narrow and away from Zeke, whom he never liked when he was dating his daughter. Zeke is clearly a guy with no redeeming qualities and a work ethic that is virtually non-existent. ‘Big Time Adolescence’ Redband Trailer: Pete Davidson Schools Griffin Gluck In The Ways Of Pre-Adulthood We have seen this kind of setup before where an older guy serves as a bad example for impressionable younger people (think Matthew McConaughey in Dazed and Confused, and even Frank Sinatra in Neil Simon’s Come Blow Your Horn). The role is perfectly tailored for Davidson, who plays it mostly for laughs as his Zeke seems clueless as to the impact of his behavior. He is a hopeless case, and Orley’s script never tries to redeem him, something a lesser-talented filmmaker might be tempted to do. The real growth is from Mo, and Gluck plays him as a basically good kid who gets way in over his head, allowing his own immaturity to get the better of him. A scene near the end between Mo and Zeke (now flipping hamburgers) is beautifully played, with the real truth of their relationship apparent between the lines with no explanation necessary. Davidson clearly has the more colorful role and shows promise beyond his TV image, but Gluck is the one who brings this film much-needed gravitas and is one to watch. Cryer tones down his own usual comic tendencies for a more typical parental role here, and there is very fine work from Laurence as the smart girl who got away, and Sweeney who also seems to know well the loser with which she is currently hooked up while bonding in her own way with Mo. Orley, who was a personal assistant to writer-director Nancy Meyers and learned a lot from that experience, invests this story with a sense of real life in between the comical set pieces. His script was actually on the Black List in 2014, and you can see why. It never falls in the trap of so many gross-out teen-oriented comedies, and that’s a relief. Producers are Mickey Liddell, Mason Novick, Jeremy Garelick, Will Phelps, Peter Shilaimon and Glen Trotiner. Check out my video review above with scenes from the film.
